Thanks to anonymous donations made through boxes placed at BP service stations, we were able to pay for classes in the Ski Dreams rehabilitation program for Andrei Polovinkin, who is from Moscow.

Thank you for giving children with severe physical and intellectual disabilities the chance to live their lives to the fullest, just because they may not be the same as everyone does not mean they shouldn’t experience the same things as we do!

What was needed: Classes in the Ski Dreams rehabilitation program at a cost of 145,700 rubles (approx.. $2,580).

Diagnosis: Childhood autism, intellectual disability with organic lesions of the central nervous system.

Taken from a letter written by his mother:

“When his grandmother and I first saw the slope, we were a little scared, but Andrei wasn’t even the slightest bit afraid! Quite the opposite: he was happy to see something new! Some time was needed for my son to get used to the slopes. After all, prior to this, he hadn’t even ever tried cross-country skiing. The whole time with Andrei, Alexei the instructor was very attentive and knowledgeable in his approach to children with special needs (since Andrei is afraid of new places, he tried to run away, on his skis, from the instructor a few times). I am grateful to him for his professionalism and patience!

Over twenty sessions were held as part of the program, and the results are already apparent. Andrei has to really focus while skiing, and this enables him to listen to and repeat the instructor’s requests, to be composed and controlled.

I think this technique is well suited to a lot of children: both for healthy children and for those with developmental disabilities! The only difference being that, for healthy children, this type of activity serves as a form of entertainment, whereas for those with special needs, it is hard work, especially for those who are just learning to walk!

I would like to thank everyone who made it possible for my son to not only learn how to ski, but also believe in himself!”
