From the letter of the mother: “Hello! I’m the mother of a child, a child with a disability Artem Shengelia. My son is now 14 years old. He has cerebral palsy, spastic dilplegia.
Intellectually, Artem is fully preserved; he is studying according to the general educational program at school No. 31 for children with disorders of the musculoskeletal system. He loves to draw. He was awarded diplomas for 1 and 2 places in competitions of children’s drawings in the school and in the district Veshnyaki, has been thanked by the Paralympic Committee of Russia for winning the contest of children’s drawings “support the Russian team at the Paralympic Games in Brazil.” He tries to take part in the social life of the school and the city.
I am very proud of my son and rejoice in his success … But there is something that does not allow me to sleep. What we seem to be used to, but nevertheless we cannot accept! These are his sick, non-walking legs!
Artem can only move with the help of two crabs-support for quite short distances. He turned into a lanky teenager from a boy. I began to notice severe deterioration – he stopped raising his legs – he was dragging them all over, stopped leaning on his heels, his legs twisted … I’m in panic – the doctors say that during puberty, rapid growth – children with cerebral palsy have especially fast choking! Muscles do not have time to grow and stretch, and the tone is very high! it is during this period that a good rehabilitation is needed; constant work with the muscles!
Doctors advised Artem to use an orthopedic exercise bike. The son tried to ride on such bike in rehabilitation centers, and he was good at it! Doctors say that this is an excellent workout for all the muscles of the legs, working out the joints and highly recommend such rehabilitation. In addition, in the winter he could serve as an exercise bike, he has such a function. And yet … next to our house is a beautiful park. All residents of our area go for a walk there! But Artem can’t – he will not physically reach there … but a bicycle, a special, three-wheeled one – for patients with cerebral palsy would help him to walk! Artem dreams so much about it! But such bike is very expensive, moreover, that his son’s height is now like an adult – 172 cm.
Our family is considered to be poor: we live with our son on his retirement and benefits from the state. Funds only enough for the necessary food. Therefore, we decided to for asking a help. I can make Artem’s dream come true only with your help! I can only hope for the participation of caring people who can help me get a bike-simulator for daily workouts and walks in the fresh air for my son! ”
