We were contacted by our partners from the Family Education Support Center for children with disabilities. It is imperative for them to equip a sensory room in which classes will be conducted with children with severe developmental disabilities.
Not everyone knows what a sensory room is and what it is for. A sensory room is an organized environment where, with the help of special equipment and objects, the senses are affected: vision, hearing, touch, smell. Doctors, psychologists, correctional teachers conduct here developmental and treatment-correctional classes with children, psychological trainings and relaxation sessions. In the active zone, exercises can be performed to develop the senses, communication skills and physical health.
Gladly exploring the “dry pool” and the sensory trail, enjoying the sound and light effects of the “starry sky” and the special effects wheel, children do not even know that they are learning something! Here they get acquainted with materials that have different shapes and textures, study the properties of objects, and develop tactile sensations.
And for a speech therapist, the sensory room is just a magic “wand” that helps to get the most persistent silent people to talk. The game removes all clamps, and the child joyfully responds, shows emotions, pronounces sounds and words. Funny game tasks develop in children memory, speech, motor skills, creativity, imagination, curiosity and observation, concentration of attention. It is an indispensable tool for working with children with severe developmental disabilities, as it develops tactile and sensory sensations, helps the child to master basic skills for socialization.
We’re starting to fundraise for the sensory room!
