From October 2019 to May 2021, a team of specialists was created and the pilot project “Portage” was successfully carried out at the Center for Social Support and Rehabilitation of Disabled Children “Rose of the Winds” (Moscow).
The “Portage” methodology is an accurate, simple, universal technology of individual work with children, which allows teaching life skills to children with the most severe and multiple developmental disabilities (TMND).
This pedagogical model allows you to work in a variety of conditions – with family children and orphans; with a different nature and degree of health disorders, including severe and multiple developmental disorders; with children of different ages. Classes can be conducted by specialists of various specialties and volunteer students, they can be conducted at home, in educational organizations, in orphanages and other institutions.
Portage has been used all over the world since the 70s of the 20th century. In Russia, more than 10 years ago, the methodology was successfully applied by Russian organizations, and the methodological materials Portage formed the basis of the early assistance system. The Association of Portage Specialists in Russia was registered in 2021.
In 5 regions of Russia, with the support of the Diema’s Dream Fund, 15 Portage teams work and there is a unique experience in applying the methodology in working with children with severe mental and physical development disorders, who were considered “unpromising” and “unteachable.”
Thanks to the classes, these children, who were previously considered “hopeless and hopeless”, learned how to wash and dress, drink and eat, sit, stand and walk, assemble constructors, draw and cut, distinguish colors, recognize objects, count, look at books, and have mastered many other motor movements. and cognitive skills, self-service skills.
