From my mother’s letter:
“Roma is the first and only child in the family, delivery on time, asphyxia during childbirth, hemorrhage of the 1st degree. Then 4 days of mechanical ventilation, 7 days of resuscitation, rehabilitation treatment, and on the 28th day we were finally at home. At first, everything went not badly, they were observed by a neurologist at the place of residence. The doctor prescribed massage, physiotherapy, and by 3 months Roma held his head, rolled over, roamed and behaved well. And then they began to notice that the son began to roll over less often and physical development did not continue, the tone began to increase. Sounded the alarm, ran to the doctors. And from that moment began the life that we now live. Permanent rehabilitation courses, exercise therapy and massage at home, hippotherapy, swimming pool. We tried to try everything that was available in our city. I could not believe that everything was so bad, it seemed that just a little more and everything would work out, my son would learn to crawl, speak and go. But that didn’t happen. Sometimes I felt pain, despair, anger at myself that I was doing something wrong, I needed more and more. After all, where, that is, exactly those doctors who will help Roma learn everything. Of course, the treatment gave its results, after each course in the hospital, we saw small steps forward. Some new movement appeared, small and not noticeable at first glance, but so important and joyful for us.
From the age of 2.8, the son began to attend a specialized kindergarten, at first it was a day stay group (for three hours a day), from the age of 3 they were transferred to a full day (from 8.00 to 16.00). Roma really liked it in the garden, the teachers even wondered why my son did not cry when I escorted him to the group. He liked communication, study, games with children. Despite the fact that he did not speak, the son could explain and say everything with gestures and separate syllables, and then with words. By the age of five, speech appeared, he quickly mastered reading, and an exciting time of learning began in the child’s life. He read everything he could, bought encyclopedias, books about the animal and plant world, of course, a lot of good old fairy tales. Outside the house, I read all the advertisements, signs, and even the signs of all the doctors in the clinic.
Roma was not spared by surgeries, at the age of 4 she underwent achiloplasty, at the age of 5 she had an operation using the Ulzibat method. We began to travel to other cities – St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara. New methods of treatment gave a big impetus to the development of his son, Roma got the opportunity to stand on his own. First, 5 seconds, 10, 15. Honestly, I cried with happiness, and my son was happy. Perhaps from the outside it seemed that these were very small successes. But for us they are huge. Over time, Roma began to walk with pleasure and for a long time with support. At home, Roma also works a lot and honestly, now with pleasure, he clearly understands that the result depends on his work. Never once said, “I won’t go, I won’t.” Now Roma can walk with support by one hand, with canes, and even a little on his own (with insurance – he is afraid to fall).
The son moved to the 5th grade of a correctional school of the 5th type. She attends school with an attendant (grandmother helps out). Reads, counts, writes independently.
Roma is a very addictive child. At first there was flora and fauna, now the son became interested in Soviet cinema. He started with Georgy Millyar, his main role and all the fairy tales with his participation. Learned his biography and filmography. At the moment, the films are Gaidai, Midshipmen, D’Artagnan and the Three Musketeers. Roma not only watches the films he likes, but also reads the actors’ autobiographies. He watches programs like, where and when these films were shot. Tries to write his own stories.
Since April 2016, Roma has been ill with type 1 diabetes. He ended up in intensive care in an unconscious state with suspected meningitis. Meningitis was said no, but there is type 1 diabetes mellitus – insulin-dependent. First, shock, tears and the eternal question – why is all this for my child. Now we have adapted (as well as to everything else) and accept it as a way of life, which consists of proper nutrition, positive emotions and, of course, sugar control, which we are trying to keep normal. In connection with this disease, the lack of independent movement was felt even more acutely (loads reduce sugar levels).
In 2020, Roma completed a rehabilitation course at the Rodnik Center, Moscow. The branch in Moscow was initially chosen because they are geographically closer. And they never regretted coming here. High-class AFC specialists, a speech therapist, a Gross simulator, a massage therapist – these people taught their son new skills, gave him a push forward, helped him take another small step towards his dream.
But Roma needs repeated courses of medical rehabilitation. My son is 11 years old, there is less and less time left, because the older the child, the more difficult the rehabilitation. I’m very worried that I won’t be able to, I won’t be able to. I am raising my son alone, there is not enough money, and I want to scream from my own impotence.
My son is almost 12 years old, there is very little time, and there are many problems. I am raising my son alone, I work, but there is not enough money to pay for the course. The salary is barely enough to study at home.
After completing a course of rehabilitation treatment – we really believe in this, our son will have stability, new confident, and most importantly independent steps with canes. And this is freedom of movement, expanding the circle of communication. After all, at school, Roma can’t even go to the blackboard to answer, but he really wants to.
I really want to ask benefactors to help my son. We believe that there are many people in the world with a kind, open heart who do not remain indifferent to someone else’s misfortune, even if they are completely unfamiliar people. And we are very grateful to God and fate that such people meet on our way.
God bless you.”
