The “Portage” method is an accurate, simple, universal technology of individual work with children with disabilities, which has proven to be highly effective in meeting the individual developmental needs of children with disabilities.
This pedagogical model allows you to work in a variety of conditions – with family children and orphans; with a different nature and degree of health disorders, including severe and multiple developmental disorders; with children of different ages. Classes can be conducted by specialists of various specialties and volunteer students, they can be conducted at home, in educational organizations, in orphanages and other institutions.
Portage has been used all over the world since the 70s of the 20th century. And more than 10 years ago, the methodology was successfully applied by Russian organizations. Currently, the principles of work on the “Portage” system are applied in the following institutions:
GBSU of the Ryazan region “Elatomsky orphanage-boarding school for mentally retarded children”,
GKU of the city of Moscow TsSSV “Trust”,
OGBOU “Rybnovskaya boarding school” (Ryazan region),
“Ryazan Children’s Home”,
Scientific and Educational Center of Practical Psychology and Psychological Service of FBGOU VO “Ryazan State University named after SA Yesenin” (Ryazan).
At the round table, we will talk about the effectiveness of the methodology using the example of world experience and the experience of application in Russia.
So, since 2006. “Portage” is successfully used on the territory of the Ryazan region, and in the “Elatomsky orphanage-boarding school for mentally retarded children” there is a unique experience of applying the methodology in working with children with severe developmental disabilities who were considered “hopeless” and “unteachable.” Thanks to the lessons, these children learned how to wash and dress, drink and eat, sit, stand and walk, assemble constructors, draw and cut, distinguish colors, recognize objects, count, look at books, and have mastered many other motor and cognitive skills, skills from the sphere of self-service. … Children have the formation and development of speech, and active socialization – they began to communicate and play with each other and with adults, get acquainted with the world around them, left their wards and began to walk on the street.
From February 2020 until May 2021 the pilot project “Portage” was successfully carried out in the OGBUZ “Orphanage of the city of Kostroma. Over the past period, there has been a positive trend in the development of children.
