We have completed the Seminar “Basic Principles of Portage” at the Center for Curative Pedagogy and Differentiated Education in Pskov.
Specialists from the Center and the Bobrovsky Orphanage took part, and they are now ready to replenish the existing teams of Portage specialists or form new teams.
In total, 26 specialists took part in the event. The seminar was held with donations from ThePromise Charitable Organization, created to help children with severe and multiple developmental disabilities, like our foundation, and which has long been our partner.
In the Pskov region, 3 teams of Portage specialists are constantly operating, who work with family children with NGYH and their parents and with orphans.
Seminar participants learned:
Create an individual initial profile of the child’s development using the principles of the Portage system.
Formulate a clear description of the child’s behavior that is understandable to parents and other professionals.
Design a curriculum for your child by setting clear, minimal, consistent goals.
Use 5 learning planning strategies to improve learning efficiency.
Establish clear criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of training.
Organize parental observation diaries.
Analyze and resolve learning difficulties using 6 strategies.
Build skills at the competency level.
Manage problem behaviors using the ABC method.
Work in a team with specialists of various specialties, including their recommendations in your training program.
We hope that each of the new specialists will be able in the near future to begin the practical application of the acquired knowledge and skills, and even more children will receive support and the opportunity, despite the most severe disabilities, to acquire vital skills.
