On September 13-15, 2022, the
Seminar “Basic principles of the Portage methodology in individual work with children with disabilities” was held in Moscow
In the City Psychological and Pedagogical Center of Moscow, the Seminar “Basic Principles of the Portage Methodology in Individual Work with Children with Disabilities” was held. The event was organized for specialists from city psychological and pedagogical centers, as well as centers for the promotion of family education, centers for social support and rehabilitation of disabled children and other children’s institutions for children with disabilities.
Within 3 days, the method of working with children according to the Portage system was mastered by specialists from 7 centers for rehabilitation and psychological and pedagogical assistance in Moscow and Obninsk, Kaluga and Mozhaisk. A total of 33 new Portage specialists were certified. The event was attended by 39 participants.
As a result of the seminar in Moscow, 6 pilot teams will start working according to the Portage method in Moscow, Moscow and Kaluga regions!
“Despite the difficult situation in the economy and the world, flying should not be left without the support of specialists. We do our best to share the tools and principles of the most effective work. Children with severe and multiple developmental disabilities are growing up right now. We know how important it is for them to start or continue to prioritize life-saving skills like self-care today. This radically changes their life and the life of the family. When the child eats by himself, dresses and puts on his own shoes, it becomes easier for the mother. When an orphan with TMND shows his success, he is more likely to be taken into the family,” says Elena Volodina, director of the Dima Mechta Charitable Foundation
The participants highly appreciated the level of organization and holding of the event. The work of the trainers received the best reviews. Here are some feedback from the participants on the results of the Evaluation Sheets (an anonymous survey after the workshop):
The seminar trainers presented the following topics:
- Creation of an individual initial profile of the development of the child.
- Formulate a clear description of the child’s behavior that is understandable to parents and other professionals.
- Developing a learning program for the child by setting clear, minimum, consistent goals.
- Using 5 Learning Planning Strategies.
- Establish clear criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of training.
- Organization of parental observation diaries.
- Analysis and elimination of learning difficulties, application of 6 strategies.
- Formation of skills at the level of competencies.
- Managing problem behavior using the ABC method.
- Working in a team with specialists from various specialties.
In addition to the theoretical part, practical exercises and role-playing games were held with all participants of the seminar.
We thank the City Psychological and Pedagogical Center for cooperation, as well as Boeing Russia and the Portage Association of Specialists in Russia for their help in conducting this seminar!
