In 2016, we continued to work on the development of helping children with severe disabilities from the orphanage Elatomsky to stand up and walk.
Thirteen children from the project this year were treated in the clinic of the Federal Bureau of Medical and Social Expertise in Moscow. Each child had an individual examination and treatment program (drug therapy, electrical stimulation, magnetic therapy, acupuncture, massage, physical therapy, etc.).
However, to get such comprehensive treatment is not something available in Elatma, but also to obtain in nearby areas of district is almost impossible – there is not the necessary institutions or specialists to provide these services. Besides, now it is possible to undergo treatment with careful budgeting, the generous rate of funding we receive from you and even FBMSE trucks volunteered to transport the children!
Luckily, two children this year had operations done on their feet – Leray and Misha, where they surprised their great doctors leading to very good predictions to be made for their further development. Leray generally was strongly inspired – before she never smiled, at least at the orphanage it is not remembered at all that she did, and was poorly responsive to other people.
Yet after the surgery in the hospital she began to smile and to make contact even with strangers – a side effect, but a positive one because of the treatment in the hospital. In general, as it may seem – Elatomsky children like to be in hospital, because for them any place beyond the children’s home – it is an opportunity to see something new and provide them great joy!
Twice this year we came to Elatma with orthopedists from Moscow – the head of the children’s orthopedic department FBMSE, prof Pozharischenskim Tsiolkovsky and also from doctors’ offices, Ph.D. Mikhailova, Natalia Ivanovna, where they have supervised the children since 2008. Not all children can be hospitalized in Moscow, so the doctors can instead examine all the children on the spot. We had a worker tell us there were children who needed new orthopedic devices and needed to undergo treatment in Moscow. So, in November, we have examined and adopted into the project three new children – Valya, Ian and Anna, and at the beginning of 2017, it has been planned to treat them in the clinic.
Most of the work is carried out by assistants every day in the orphanage – they are engaged with each child, dressing them, fitting orthopaedic devices onto them and then motivate the children to walk, making progress a possible feat.
All the children through comprehensive work on being able to stand and walk have continued to convey positive development in:
• Go completely on their own or with the support of the hands or with a walker,
• Strengthen the muscles of the whole body, especially the neck, back, legs,
• Children continue to grow in height and gain weight
• Become more attentive, sociable, and smiling, showing more interest in the world around them,
• Develop intellectually
• From one girl the diagnosis of deafness was removed – after the training of verticalization she began to hear
• Improve the process of eating, and other vital functions,
• All become more independent and mobile, moving more with confidence, making it easier to care for children and enhance their development,
• As a result of these changes, they have allowed a more seamless integration into society (eg, children were walking in the street).
We sincerely thank all the participants of the “vertical integration” who helped due to their love of children and their high level of professionalism – physicians, FBMSE staff, Elatomskogo Orphanage Foundation , the nurses taking care of children for the period of stay in Moscow!
