Everyone is used to the fact that only specialists can conduct correctional and developmental classes with a child with TMND. Most parents give up and do not even realize how much success and achievements they can achieve with their child almost on their own, with the right support of a Portage specialist.
In the spring, we trained 117 specialists from 13 organizations: NGOs, rehabilitation centers, family support, and even a children’s home for children with disabilities.
After a three-day seminar, the specialists began to practice the Portage technique and took 2 children with SMDD and their families as accompaniment.
The specialist meets with the family once a week, together with the parents they form the goal of the lesson, select an activity card, and the mother herself can successfully develop the skills of her child. Parents conduct classes themselves EVERY DAY.
But in order for parents to be successful and children with TMND to develop, it is important to follow the principles and norms of Portage, to master the materials of the methodology. Therefore, trainers, consultants and supervisors of the foundation accompany new professionals and families for 6-8 months. It’s called a pilot project.
An important part is field monitoring of the project. This is necessary to evaluate the quality of services, check records, maintain records, discuss difficulties with field work and communicate with families. And now the trips for the purpose of monitoring and supervision have been completed, the reports have been submitted and processed.
